The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) are organising a series of seminars on administrative justice. The aims of the seminars are to review the current state of theoretical work on administrative justice; consider recent developments in public administration in the UK; assess the current state of administrative justice in the UK and consider how administrative justice might be enhanced.
The series of seminars aims to bring together academics who undertake research in different sub-divisions of administrative justice; to facilitate dialogue between them and the major stakeholders in the field; and to develop a research agenda that focuses on some of the most important questions that need to be addressed.
The first seminar, which took place in March in Edinburgh, considered three 'state of the art' reviews of by Professor Robert Kagan (University of California, Berkeley), Professor Robin Creyke (Australian National University, Canberra) and Professor Mark Hertogh (University of Groningen, the Netherlands). The second seminar, which will take place on 26 and 27 September in York, will consider current developments in governance and public administration, service delivery and managerialism, audit and accounting, information technology and civic culture, and their implications for the relationship between the state and the citizen. The speakers, who are all experts in their respective fields, are Professor Andrew Gamble (University of Sheffield), Professors John Clark and Janet Newman (Open University), Professor Irvine Lapsley (University of Edinburgh), Professor Helen Margetts (University of Oxford) and Professor Albert Weale (University of Essex).
The organisers (Professor Michael Adler and Dr Richard Whitecross) are keen to extend an invitation to practitioners and policy makers to attend these seminars and would particularly welcome the participation of those who sit as chairmen or members of tribunals. Anyone who wishes to attend should contact Richard Whitecross. Spaces are limited and priority will be given to those who apply early.
