JSB Seeking Tribunals Training Director

(February 2007)

The JSB is looking to appoint a Tribunals Training Director to work closely with the JSB's tribunals team.

Although the JSB has no formal responsibility to provide training for any tribunal jurisdiction, it has established itself over the last few years as an adviser and provider of judgecraft training. It is anticipated that all of these functions will continue and develop following the creation of the Tribunals Service and this post reflects the wide scope of the JSB's responsibilities in relation to tribunals. The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • Designing and delivering generic skills courses.
  • Ensuring the review and delivery of tribunal frameworks, guidance and handbooks as required, ensuring that they meet the needs of all tribunals.
  • Leading the Tribunal Evaluation programme of tribunals and the subsequent follow-up on behalf of the Tribunals Senior President.

The Tribunals Training Director is appointed for a fixed term of four years, starting in January 2008, and is a member of the JSB's Tribunals Committee. Applicants should have an appointment as a tribunal legal member, extensive knowledge and experience of tribunals, possess the necessary skills for the design and delivery of training and an understanding of the importance of appraisal and mentoring. The successful candidate will also need to be able to demonstrate leadership and imagination in the context of the diverse tribunal world and the variety of organisational structures which exist.

He or she will be expected to commit 40 days to the work of the JSB, on a fee paid basis, or on secondment.

Further information about the role can be obtained from Mary Holmes, Head of Tribunal Training at the JSB, on 020 7217 4432 or mary.holmes@jsb.gsi.gov.uk.
